Find your inspiration closer home!

Do that. That’s where you should go looking to find some true inspiration; inspiration you can touch, feel and that will build with time and show you the path to tread on.

Shooting for the stars and reaching for the moon is what ambition is all about and that’s what we have been taught from day one. But, what about the journey from your “Now!” to get to that moon? How do you learn about the path to take, the incremental steps that get you there, the defeats you need to face before you arrive?

Defacto, attention is drawn to stalwarts of our time and times before. Gandhi, Edison and such famed personalities are pointed to as historical figures to emulate from. Go ahead and learn about them. They lived in a different time and did different things that influenced the course of our past and present. However, it’s difficult to find a constant in the realm of inspiration from them. The more recent personalities such as Steve Jobs of Apple and Dr. Abdul Kalam, the missile man of India also provide inspiration. Mostly, it is inspiration that points to aspirations to reach their heights. All of these people have a place and time in our own lives to learn from, no doubt about that. But, it’s the aspiration of their heights that is the driver more than anything else. And, we all know that there was one Steve Jobs or one Gandhi.

Everyone of us and our own lives are unique. What you do or will do is unique and it’s for you to chart your individual path while drawing inspiration and lessons from far and near as you chisel your own destiny. Mind you, none of the personalities we look up to, set off to say that one day I will make my mark and influence the world. They all set out to do what they personally wanted to achieve, in many a case not knowing when or how they will pave their path, leave alone where they would end up. They started for themselves and soon, many others found a unity in purpose with them, which made them out to be the personalities they are today.

Look for your inspiration closer home. It doesn’t always have to be a towering personality you need to look up to. My kid’s bus driver who makes it on time early in the morning every day, to pick them up and drive them to school safely, inspires me. I am inspired by the teacher who has an extra-curricular activity planned for the kids an hour before the school starts and holds the door open for them to come in even before the sun breaks out. The dad or mom who goes out to win bread for the family against all odds, no matter what, inspires me. Parents who multi-task to provide for a family yet, pursue meaningful careers and hobbies inspire me. Some venture to take on and tackle challenges of the world.

Look around you and find inspiration from those you interact with everyday. Learn from them as well as influence them with what is good in you. This keeps the flow of inspiration fluid and constant. Then, continue to build your aspirations, look to learn from the experiences of towering personalities and tweak your own agenda and actions to get to where you want to be. Following in someone’s footsteps is one thing, but the current times provide you the opportunity to tread and create your own paths and go, discover unchartered territories.

Get inspired, aspire and accomplish!

Innovation is an accident!

Image

The act of innovation and the results thereby are always by accident. And, that’s when they are the sweetest.

Innovation is the after effect, the result of creativity. And when is creativity at its best?

Well, there are two schools of thought. One believes that you need to have experienced certain hardship, been under pressure or difficult circumstances and as you toil to get out of this situation, you innovate. You think and act in creative ways to solve the issue at hand and come up with some very novel ways of doing so.

Another school of thought believes that true innovation, for that matter quality innovation happens in an environment that helps nurture creativity. True breeding grounds of creativity need to be established and encouraged where an issue to be solved is first recognized; then, those enlisted to act on solving the issue are freed up of any other responsibilities and are charged with focusing on this one thing.

More often that not, history has shown us that true innovation happens under pressure, when you are trying to solve an issue you are struggling with. However, the latter is true as well, but what happens there is not creative innovation to solve an issue, but more of solution enhancement and optimization; albeit creative.

Let me enumerate through some examples.

The invention of the round wheel was innovation that happened to fulfill a need, transport; the improvisation of the wheel to make it last longer, go faster, adapt to different vehicles, etc. falls under solution enhancement.

Connecting people through e-mail and Facebook during this Internet age was innovation addressing a need, social connectivity. Twitter, chat and the different facelifts we see of Facebook are improvisation and solution enhancement.

Generally speaking, the birth of innovation to solve an issue happens purely due to the urge to solve the issue; there is not much needed in terms of money and establishments to do that for its entirely based on frugality and the excitement to see something new. What follows after that, demands a lot more in terms of money and material to improvise and scale.

Not to say that one is righteous than the other, we all know that the world needs both.

Creativity, whether in profession or hobby is the spark that makes what you do purposeful. Where do you find your fulfillment?  In the former or the latter? Once you can answer that, you will know where your passion, your heart lies and where you can prosper and thrive.

What keeps you awake at night? Not an issue, I hope!

What does your daily life comprise of?

A regular scheduled work week, chaperoning the kids to their after school activities, a family dinner night, a date night, drinks out with friends, some TV time, a weekend movie perhaps, so on and so forth.

But in between these regulars that we call “life”, is there anything else you do that actually excites you? Most people may find their calendars full and their strength & resolve exhausted just keeping up with the daily rigmarole. It may sound daunting but you can actually find rejuvenated energy by pursuing some exciting moments during your daily schedule that eventually will provide you with the excitement, the fuel and as a result renewed strength to refresh yourself and truly “live” unbounded. If you have heard the old adage of adding life to years and not years to your life, this is exactly what it is.

It could be gardening, golfing or spending time discovering the world with your loved ones. It could be doing service, reading, writing or singing and it could also be something totally unrelated to what you do daily. Perhaps a hobby,a project to the side or anything that piques your interest. Something, that takes your mind off your daily life, keeps you highly engrossed where you hardly notice the time spent and are not so much focused on results as you are in the act of pursuing it. And you do it, for the sheer joy of doing it. Some of us are lucky whose regular work is their passion too. For those pursuing an interest outside of your regular work, you will find renewed energy and zeal for your regular work as well resulting in better influence in that sphere. Not just your hobby or work, your life in general will be holistically vigourous.

Excitement, adrenalin pumping and pure joy are to be experienced. When I say that life is to be lived, this is exactly it, this rush of excitement is to be experienced and it only comes from your pursuing something for the pleasure of it. When work is not really work anymore, it is exciting, you want to pursue it further and this interest leads to your perfection and mastery in this pursuit of your choice. All of this sprouts from your interest in the pursuit and without you even knowing it, you excel in your choice. While you enjoy the pursuit, it further fetches you success unimaginable without your asking for it.

What is unique about us humans is that we are all wired so differently that we share a variety of interests. Imagine all of us pursuing our own excitement and as a result, we have every field flourishing due to the passion each one shares for their pursuits.

As I always say, seek & do things exciting enough to either give you a great night’s sleep or rob you of it, that’s when you know you are living!
